4-30-08 Today I walked on French land. We walked for about three hours actually. When we arrived in Cannes the day was overcast and it was quite cool – maybe in the low 60’s– very nice for walking. We wondered all over the main city – down narrow streets paved with brick – old apartment type buildings with their shutters open and laundry hanging from the balconies. I don’t know why but I find that look really appealing – I guess it feels cozy and homey like someone has been working hard. The shops were all open and vying for our euros. After two hours of being on our feet – we needed a wee sip of café – we sat at an outdoor table – sipped a café ole` (coffee with milk and much foam) it was entertaining to do some people watching. After coffee we walked around and came upon a gigantic farmers market under a large tarp canopy – we bought olives, fresh mini tomatoes, rustic crusty bread, goat cheese, gorgonzola cheese and eight red ripe strawberries. We took our culinary delights to a park by the sea – bought a beer for David and a red wine for me. The pigeons were jealous and would not leave us alone – I found out that the sound of a crumpling paper bag shooed them away much better than a whooshing hand – although we did give them some bread crumbs after we were done – Damn French pigeons are as intrusive as American ones. To me the best part of our lunch was the tomatoes – I have not tasted homegrown tomatoes like that in a long time – a pleasure to my taste buds. After our “picnic” we walked again, I’d say for at least another hour. I saw a vendor making fresh crepes – lots of locally made soap (which I bought a bar) – lots of French tablecloths, napkins etc. Many localized food shops, wine, cheese etc. It was a great day – my first of many in France.
Bon Jour!
Bon Jour!
PS - the photo of the lovely steaming crepe` was not ours - but really how could I resist?
